Meerut: Marking World Earth Day, Venkateshwara University/Institute on the National Highway bypass organised a national seminar, a large-scale plantation drive, an awareness rally and a debate competition on the impact of excessive use of chemical fertilisers and pesticides on human health.
The event was inaugurated by founder chairman Dr Sudhir Giri, pro-chancellor Dr Rajeev Tyagi and vice-chancellor Prof Krishnakant Dave with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp. Addressing students and faculty, Dr Giri cautioned that indiscriminate exploitation of natural resources is accelerating global warming and could lead to severe consequences if corrective steps are not taken in time. He administered an oath to promote environmental conservation and urged participants to take up plantation initiatives on a larger scale.
Chief guest Prof (Dr) Arvind Kumar Mishra highlighted the growing impact of climate change, noting that temperatures have already touched 40–45°C in April. He linked excessive use of chemical inputs in agriculture to serious health risks, including cancer, and stressed the need to adopt organic farming practices. He also advised a shift from junk and packaged foods to traditional, natural diets.
Dr Rajeev Tyagi emphasised that plantation alone is not enough and called for sustained efforts towards protection and nurturing of trees. He warned that neglecting environmental conservation could have long-term adverse effects.
Around 150 students participated in a debate on “Environmental protection as a global necessity and a fundamental duty.” Winners were awarded medals and certificates, while all participants received certificates of participation.
Faculty members, agricultural experts and students were present at the event. The programme was coordinated by Dr Vinay Kumar Singh and Dr Jyoti Singh.
