Meerut: Venkteshwara University and VIMS Super Speciality Hospital on Thursday accorded a grand welcome and felicitation to renowned haematologist and Padma Shri awardee Dr Suresh Hangawadi. The event also featured a special academic session on the “Role of Factor Replacement Therapy in the Treatment of Haemophilia,” attended by medical students, faculty members and healthcare professionals.
The programme was inaugurated by Dr Hangawadi along with Pro-Chancellor Dr Rajeev Tyagi, Vice-Chancellor Prof Krishna Kant Dave, Finance Director CA Yuvraj Singh and Dean Medical Prof Prabhu M.H.
Addressing the gathering, Dr Hangawadi highlighted the transformative role of factor replacement therapy in managing haemophilia, a rare inherited bleeding disorder affecting more than a million people worldwide. He called upon the medical fraternity to strengthen efforts towards awareness, early diagnosis and accessible treatment for patients suffering from the condition.
Sharing his personal journey, Dr Hangawadi revealed that the loss of his maternal uncle due to inadequate treatment for haemophilia inspired him to pursue medicine. Later, he discovered that he himself was living with the same disorder. Undeterred, he completed his medical education and went on to establish the Karnataka Haemophilia Society. Over the past four decades, he has dedicated his life to providing free treatment and support to thousands of haemophilia patients.
On the occasion, Dr Rajeev Tyagi announced Dr Hangawadi’s induction into the Advisory Board of Venkteshwara University. He said the celebrated physician’s life of dedication, perseverance and selfless service would inspire future generations of medical professionals.
The university administration felicitated Dr Hangawadi with a shawl, memento and bouquet in recognition of his outstanding contribution to healthcare and society.
