'JagrukMahila.in' portal launched to promote legal awareness and access to government welfare schemes
New Delhi: A legal awareness workshop aimed at educating Muslim women about their legal rights in the aftermath of the Supreme Court's landmark judgment on instant triple talaq witnessed the participation of more than 100 women, including several survivors of instant triple talaq. During the programme, participants were introduced to JagrukMahila.in, a dedicated digital platform designed to provide reliable and easy-to-understand information on legal rights, relevant laws, legal remedies, and support services for women.
The workshop was organised by Indraprastha Engineering College (IPEC), Ghaziabad, in collaboration with the Centre for Human Rights and Social Welfare, under a research project funded by the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR).
The inaugural session was attended by Dr Mehjabeen Bano, Principal Investigator of the project, Dr Ghaffar Ali Khan, representative of the District Minority Office, Satyam, representative of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Nishat Hussain, Rajasthan Convenor of the National Muslim Women's Welfare Committee, Lady Qazi Jahanara, Maulana Mohammad Saleem, advocate Ruby Khan, representatives of the Rajasthan Waqf Board, and social worker Saroj Khan.
Addressing the gathering, Dr Mehjabeen Bano said that access to justice begins with awareness of legal rights. She encouraged women to pursue education, skill development, financial independence, and active participation in the workforce, stating that empowered and educated women are key contributors to social and national development.
Sharing her experience from the movement against instant triple talaq, Nishat Hussain described the Supreme Court's verdict as a historic milestone for women's dignity and equality. She urged participants to remain informed about their legal rights and to support one another in seeking justice.
Advocate Ruby Khan explained the legal protections available to women under Indian law and guided participants on accessing legal remedies, police assistance, and support from relevant government authorities in family and social matters. Representatives from the District Minority Office and the Rajasthan Waqf Board also provided information on scholarships, skill development, self-employment, entrepreneurship, and other government welfare schemes, along with details on eligibility criteria and application procedures.
Field investigators associated with the research project shared their experiences from community-level awareness campaigns and stressed the need for sustained legal literacy initiatives to ensure that women have access to accurate legal information.
The participants appreciated the launch of JagrukMahila.in, describing it as a valuable resource for women seeking legal guidance and government support. The organisers expressed confidence that the initiative would strengthen legal awareness, promote gender justice, and empower women to become more informed, self-reliant, and confident in exercising their rights.
