Innovation, Creativity and Ownership: MIET Marks World Intellectual Property Day with a Vision for the Future

Education Adda |Meerut| In an era where ideas fuel economies and innovation shapes societies, World Intellectual Property Day serves as a powerful reminder of the need to protect creativity and promote original thinking. Marking the occasion, Meerut Institute of Engineering and Technology (MIET) organized a comprehensive initiative to highlight the significance of intellectual property (IP) in empowering young innovators and entrepreneurs.

Observed annually on April 26, World Intellectual Property Day underscores the role of patents, copyrights, trademarks, and industrial designs in driving innovation across sectors. At MIET, the day was commemorated through expert talks, interactive sessions, and engaging discussions aimed at sensitizing students to the importance of safeguarding their ideas and research.

Faculty members emphasized that intellectual property is not merely a legal safeguard but a strategic asset that fosters innovation by ensuring recognition and economic returns for creators. Students were encouraged to view their academic projects and research work as potential intellectual assets capable of protection and commercialization.

“Today’s students are tomorrow’s innovators. Early awareness of intellectual property rights equips them to convert ideas into impactful solutions,” a senior faculty member remarked during the session.

The programme also highlighted India’s growing focus on innovation and entrepreneurship, driven by flagship initiatives such as ‘Make in India’ and ‘Startup India’. Institutions like MIET, speakers noted, play a vital role in strengthening this ecosystem by promoting research, incubation, and industry collaboration.

Adding to its achievements, MIET has demonstrated consistent progress in the field of intellectual property. The institute established its Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Cell in 2018, beginning with just three patents. Since then, it has organized regular workshops and awareness programmes to educate both faculty and students on IPR processes and significance.

These sustained efforts have translated into remarkable growth in patent filings. While the institute secured 52 patents in 2023, the number rose to 102 in 2024 and further surged to 141 patents in 2025, marking a significant milestone in its innovation journey.

IPR Cell Incharge Rohit Agarwal stated that students are introduced to intellectual property concepts from their first year itself, enabling them to develop innovative ideas and successfully file patents by the time they reach their final year. He further added that several patents from the institution have received government grants, while some innovations are already in the process of commercialization.

Students also actively engaged in discussions on plagiarism, patent filing procedures, and ethical use of digital content. Real-life case studies provided insights into how intellectual property disputes can influence businesses and innovation landscapes.

The event concluded with a call to action—encouraging students to respect originality, think creatively, and contribute responsibly to the knowledge economy. By marking World Intellectual Property Day, MIET reaffirmed its commitment to fostering a culture of innovation, integrity, and intellectual awareness—key pillars for building a progressive and self-reliant nation.
