DRDO Scientist Delivers Lecture on Intellectual Property Rights at MIET

Researchers advised to safeguard innovations; DRDO offers grants for promising research

Meerut: The IPR Cell and Institution's Innovation Council (IIC) of Meerut Institute of Engineering and Technology (MIET) organised a special lecture on Intellectual Property Rights (IPR), with Dr K.P. Singh, Associate Director, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), addressing students, researchers and faculty members on safeguarding innovations and strengthening India's research ecosystem.

Speaking at the session, Dr Singh advised researchers to store research data on offline systems rather than internet-connected devices to minimise the risk of data leakage. He also cautioned innovators against sharing complete technical details with patent agents during the initial stages of the patenting process, recommending that sensitive information should be disclosed only when the patent application is being prepared.

Highlighting research funding opportunities, Dr Singh said DRDO encourages innovative projects with strong technological and societal relevance and is prepared to provide research grants ranging from ₹1 crore to several crores, depending on the merit and requirements of the project. He urged young researchers to focus on innovation capable of addressing national priorities.

The expert also explained the key forms of intellectual property protection, including patents, copyrights, trademarks, industrial designs, geographical indications (GI), and semiconductor integrated circuit layout designs. He emphasised that protecting intellectual property is as important as developing the innovation itself, particularly for researchers and technology startups.

Among those present were Campus Director Dr Sanjay Kumar Singh, Prof. (Dr.) Pradeep Pant, Dr Gaurav Goyal, Dr Vijay Kumar Sharma, Dr Pankaj Sharma, Dr Swati Sharma, and Rohit Agrawal. The programme was conducted by Anshika Chaudhary and Aarti Verma.
