Meerut: Shri Venkateshwara University, VGI Meerut, in collaboration with the Uttar Pradesh Department of Forest, Environment and Climate Change, inaugurated the 'Vriksharopan Mahayagya 2026' with a large-scale plantation drive, an environmental awareness rally, and a pledge ceremony aimed at promoting sustainable living and ecological conservation.
Addressing the gathering, Balkar Singh, Senior IAS Officer and Housing Commissioner, Government of Uttar Pradesh, said that Uttar Pradesh would play a pivotal role in achieving the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047 and the Green India–Clean India mission. He urged citizens to transform tree plantation into a mass movement for environmental sustainability.
Sudhir Giri, Founder Chairman of the Venkateshwara Group, appealed to people to celebrate birthdays, wedding anniversaries, and other social occasions by planting saplings and gifting plants, thereby contributing to a greener and healthier future.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Rajeev Tyagi, Pro-Chancellor of the University, highlighted that large-scale afforestation remains the most effective solution to combat global warming and climate change. He also emphasized the need to eliminate single-use plastic and adopt environmentally responsible practices.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Krishan Kant Dave announced that the university would continue its plantation and environmental awareness campaign throughout the month of July.
The programme commenced with ceremonial tree plantation by the dignitaries. Senior government officials, including CDO Ashwini Mishra, ADM Garima Singh, SDM Chandrakanta, DFO Rajeev Singh, along with university administrators, faculty members, students, and staff, participated in the event. The gathering concluded with a collective pledge to strengthen public participation in environmental conservation and build a greener, cleaner India.
