MSDE’s DGT Launches Green Skills and EV Training Programme in Collaboration with Shell India

Meerut: In a major step toward preparing youth for the future of green energy and e-mobility, the Directorate General of Training (DGT), under the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE), has launched a Green Skills and Electric Vehicle (EV) training programme in partnership with Shell India. The initiative is aimed at empowering students and faculty with hands-on, future-ready skills in green energy technologies and sustainable mobility.

This pan-India programme will be implemented across select Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and National Skill Training Institutes (NSTIs) located in Delhi-NCR, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka. It will be carried out by Shell India’s training partner, Edunet Foundation.

Speaking on the significance of the initiative, Jayant Chaudhary, Minister of State (Independent Charge), MSDE and State Education Minister, stated:
"Our partnership with Shell India reflects the government’s strong commitment to aligning skills with sustainability. Green energy, electric mobility, and large-scale climate solutions are not only crucial for environmental conservation but also open new avenues for innovation, talent, and enterprise in India. Through this programme, we aim to prepare our youth not just for jobs, but also for contributing to a sustainable planet and the global green economy."

Trishaljit Sethi, Director General, DGT, emphasized, "This collaboration marks a significant milestone in integrating industry-relevant curriculum and modern training infrastructure into ITIs and NSTIs. By introducing EV technologies into vocational training, we ensure our students gain practical, real-world skills. The joint certification, trainer upskilling, and placement support elements will play a vital role in enhancing youth capabilities in the green mobility sector."

Speaking on Shell India’s role in the initiative, Mansi Madan Tripathi, Chairperson, Shell Group of Companies India & Senior VP, Shell Lubricants Asia-Pacific, said:
"At Shell, our goal is to empower local communities with skills for emerging job markets. Training youth in green energy skills is a crucial step toward a low-carbon future. Our partnership with DGT and Edunet Foundation enables hands-on training in green energy and electric mobility, helping students evolve with the changing energy landscape and contribute meaningfully to India's net-zero goals."

The training will be delivered through a structured multi-tier model in select ITIs and NSTIs. Phase 1 of the programme includes:

  • A 240-hour Advanced EV Technician Course at 4 NSTIs.

  • A 90-hour Job-Oriented EV Skill Course at 12 ITIs equipped with Shell-supported EV labs.

  • A 50-hour Foundational Green Skills Module at other ITIs without physical lab infrastructure.

The curriculum, co-developed by Shell, Edunet Foundation, and DGT, covers EV systems, diagnostics, battery technology, digital tools, and safety protocols. The initiative also includes training-of-trainers (ToT) for 250 instructors, joint certifications by Shell and DGT, and robust placement support.

A major highlight of this programme is the establishment of dedicated EV Skill Labs in select ITIs and NSTIs. These labs are designed to deliver industry-aligned practical training through expert-led sessions. Going beyond the lab, successful candidates will receive co-branded certification and assistance in securing employment opportunities in the EV and green energy sectors.

As India’s apex body for vocational training, DGT will play a crucial role in the implementation and success of this initiative. By combining a comprehensive curriculum, specialized infrastructure, and industry collaboration, this partnership will equip India’s youth with the skills and credentials needed to thrive in the growing green economy—driving innovation, employability, and a sustainable future.
